the infamous planet rhythm imprint is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2014. 20 naturally is a landmark-age and shows the label s ongoing persistence and hunger to catch the right beat. over the years many sounds within the techno genre have been showcased on this warm and respected home. coincidentally the label (now situated in rotterdam) just got onto a new a new flock of producers making their way into the crates of respected djs and like minded people wordwide.

miss djax is proof that age doesnt necessarily always bring peace. for 25 years now, she has stomped on the face of techno and acid with hard punishing beats and radioactive 303 sounds.

scenes from our classic future is the realization of three songs and two projects that came together as one. as young aspiring musicians since the early age of 12, greg paulus and john camp practiced playing jazz standards into the wee small hours of the morning together. eventually the two would find themselves both in new york under new and more electronic circumstances. deeply indebted to the mastery of herbie hancock, paulus and camp would reconnect, this time with synthesizers, and continue on their musical journey together.

corbu are an electronic, indie-rock band from brooklyn, new york spearheaded by producer and multi-instrumentalist jonathan graves. corbu are jonathan, todd hoellerman (drums, keys), amanda scott (synths, percussion), julian ferraldo (guitar, keys) and brian murphy (bass, keys). named after french architect le corbusier, the band has a strong creative aesthetic. graves writes the music from visual ideas, which he translates into sound. corbu songs are often heard partially or entirely in dreams, and are influenced by films, physical spaces and a childhood love of nature and science fiction. and it works. corbus music is beautifully crafted, taking the listener on a journey from day to night, through exhilarating sunsoaked sonic landscapes to land softly on the surface of the moon. jonathan began singing and playing different instruments at age nine, and eventually fell in love with samplers and their ability to bend conventional sounds into something abstract and new.

gerome sportelli presents sporty limited, a new record label managed by himself as a limited vinyl series. after big success with his krax records in 2004, veteran gerome sportelli is back with a new label project. the genre of the label swings between dance floor oriented house and techno, with a touch of acid and of course some dusty old school flavours. gerome’s already active in the music industry since the early 90’s as a producer, dj, label manager, party promoter and graphic designer. his music ‘smells’ old school, just like the early age of acid house, but infused with today’s intelligent constructions and an engaged vision on music. gerome’s music is made from bronze age analogue synths, love, passion and modern digital mixing techniques.for this first sporty limited release, gerome comes out with three stylish tracks. the first track, a side “drive”, is a fat house stomper with strong stabs and female voice hits. the break is intense and works effectively on packed dance floors. b1 is called “free range” and feels like summer. it’s full of classic house sounds, filtered strings and hypnotic loops. this is a chicago­styled, disco sampled, deep and classy house track we love and cherish. the b2 track, “don’t go”, is composed with a classic house bass, shuffled 909 drums and dark space strings. you’ll immediately recognize the deep and melodic detroit house sound.

kid sublime s protégé j.a.n. drops his brand new debut 12 .amsterdam based j.a.n. got inspired by local dj’s in the amsterdam nightlife scene at early age. soon he started djing, and hooked up with fellow amsterdammer and dj/producer kid sublime, who showed him the ropes of rocking a sampler. j.a.n. quickly caught the virus and invested in his own digital equipment, started digging for samples, and thereby widening his musical spectrum.

eric is definately swedens most interesting and skillful producer when it comes to underground deep house and soulful techno. eric ericksson released his first single in 96 with several releases since then on respected labels, both indie and major. at age 18, he released a single on derrick mays label fragile, alongside artists such as carl craig and laurent garnier. later the same year he, as part of the duo minimalisterna, released a full-length album on virgin records. in 2011 the ep someone is watching was released on carl craigs planet e communications. as co-founder of kass recordings he released the work of some of the top artists on the swedish scene, such as zoo brazil and style of eye. in 2009 he formed north beach together with daniel howe and since then they had three releases on kant recordings and played in well-respected venues in europe. his latest 12 inch vinyl love cannot was released this summer on freerange recordings.

boya is davin conaty, a young musician from the northwest of ireland. he grew up playing classical piano and trombone, which he left behind at the age of sixteen to play drums in a punk band. now he has moved onto machines - and somehow he has managed to extract as much feeling from them as live instruments. this is his first ep. we are proud to present it.

maneuvering the perilous depths of heartbreak and ecstasy, skin towns bewitching r&b pop stunner the room approaches the elusive mysteries of desire and longing with directness and urgency. unabashedly romantic (and delightfully hedonistic), the la based outfits modern r&b may sit alongside nicely with contemporary hitmakers like the-dream or mike will made it, but they align closer to the to the freakiness of ginuwine, adina howard, and silk juxtaposed against feather-weight synth trails of new age.

if chicago and detroit are the cities in which house and techno were born and raised, it was in italy circa 1990 that this delirious party music experienced a piano-driven coming of age. so far, so spangled. but while that may be the official story, there are other italian narratives too. take francois le roy and nanni for instance - two djs and producers from southern italy for whom, in the early nineties, the likes of aphex twin, autechre and air liquide were important, alongside the machine funk of detroit and the immersive soundtracks of the ambient generation. both artists are steeped in underground club music, and their new release on shabby doll records is a fine example of tough, tech-edged house. the *crossing roads* ep features four tracks that showcase their melodic yet relentless groove, they may be based in milan, but on this record, the influence of detroit, chicago and new york runs deep.

spearheading freitags new focus on the subgenres industrial techno, dark and raw is martin dolgener, a veteran of professional media sound design since the early 90s. martins been a music maker from the age of twelve, crafting beats using a key-tar and ghetto blaster.

inspired by the infinitely numbered harmonies transmitted by vista, a benevolent being from a distant dimension, iasos broke ground for a new age of electronic sound manipulation.

john digweed and nick muir collide with psycatron on this pounding techno fuelled number, harking back to the golden age of acid tinged basslines and urgent, frenetic drums. furious breakdowns build anticipation on this peak-time dancefloor killer!

etherwerks second release is an ep titled triplane by hannu ikola. the release includes three unique tracks with a diverse approach to modern techno. starting off the release, a blend between experimental styles and big room techno, *black ingrained dust* draws from driving rhythmic elements and swelling textures. *escape pod* is a cut with classic drum machine aesthetics, echoing the golden age of techno. the closing track *pylon* is a dubby techno heater with growling synth basses and ghostly detuned chords, presenting a strong analogue flavour.

brooklyns boroughs are contaminated by creators, so the only surprise hearing alex burkats first 100% silk masters was how subtly exquisite he had nailed them down. patient, swelling loops of new age club mist give way to classic chicago figure-8 bass patterns, and dubby, sampled drum fills punctuate before billowing back out into breathy warehouse atmospherics.
his recent ep for mister saturday night explored more upbeat-oriented dynamics but tarot unwinds with a dreamier deja vu—waves of arpeggiated echoes, strobing stereo shimmer, and low acid warble arcing over a limitless subterranean dance floor. this is hypnotic humanist mantric mystery music for the 21st century, for those invested in what the deck has to hold.

kid cultures experience in the electronic music has been firmly rooted from amsterdams thriving scene, the city where he currently resides, the diverse nature of the music scene in his home-town has given culture a wide array of soundscapes to influence his music, taking inspiration from jazz, funk, and hip-hop as well as house and techno.

for those who know the story of the bridge wars, there is some irony found in the fact that scott la rock, representing the south bronx, was born in queens, though he did relocate to the south bronx at a very young age. after graduating high school la rock spent four years in vermont at castleton college where he earned varsity letters in basketball, but more importantly for the world of hip hop he became more and more enamored with music. on graduation he returned to new york and began working as a dj and as a social worker at the franklin armory mens shelter in the bronx. it was at the shelter that scott met kris parker and the duo formed boogie down productions. the rest, as they say, is history. roughly a year after the tragic shooting death of boogie down productions founder, dj and producer scott la rock b boy records and krs-one issued this special remix album, a man and his music (remixes from around the world). billed as a limited edition collectors classic the project was released in a limited run – briefly available in the 90s – and now after years of being unavailable reappears as a tribute to one of the genres early pioneers.

following on from the release of david ks well-received sneakers & playground ep, the unnerving pairing of nico & pherox (aka tim querengaesser) return with a record that is veiled by in a dark and mysterious shroud. nico (previously known as verena) is a young and fresh female artist, influenced from an early age by the classical work of her father (who worked as a music composer), whilst pherox is a more familiar presence in todays deep clubbing landscape, having released on mupa, catenaccio, dumb unit, stock5 and his very own label, slash. on this ep, the pair explore a broad palette of sounds, taking in italian horror film-esque chords, chopped and screwed vocal samples, rolling basslines, soothsaying vocals, drawn out fog horn stabs. this is deep music, flavoured by the nocturnal, tinted by the eighties, and ultimately full of originality.
